Ottawa (October 24, 2018): Cathy McLeod, Conservative Shadow Minister for Indigenous and Northern Affairs, issued the following statement regarding the Trudeau government’s failure to update the Nutrition North program:
“In the 2015 election, Justin Trudeau committed to sitting down with Northerners and look at ways to decrease the staggering costs of food in remote communities. Three years have gone by, and the Liberals have made zero changes to this vital program.
“Last week, we learned that five major Inuit organizations withdrew from the consultation process on Nutrition North, accusing the Trudeau government of only being concerned about ‘tokenism and optics’.
“In fact, one leader was even told by government officials, ‘If you guys don’t want to be at the table, it’s going to move forward anyway.’ This arrogant and patronizing remark is emblematic of the Trudeau government’s attitude toward Canada’s North.
“Justin Trudeau has broken the promise he made to Northerners in the last election. Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are committed to empowering communities in northern Canada, and working collaboratively to improve access to nutritional food for all Canadians no matter where they live.”
